The Tale Of Samuel Whiskers Summary
The Tale Of Samuel Whiskers follows Beatrix Potter’s 12th book, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck and it begins by introducing us once again to Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit and her kittens, Moppet, and Mittens, and of course naughty Tom Kitten. Beatrix Potter tells us that Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit is a very anxious mother and, because she doesn’t want her kittens to get lost or into mischief she puts them in a cupboard, especially on baking day. However, Tom doesn’t want to get shut in the cupboard along with Mittens and Moppet so he decides to hide and so he tries to escape up the chimney.
As he climbs he finds a crack in the wall that is just big enough to squeeze through. He squeezes through and finds that he is underneath the attic floorboards. There he meets Mr. Samuel Whiskers and his wife Anna Maria who catch him and tie him up. After some discussion, the rats decide that they should make a pudding out of him! They cover poor Tom with dough and butter that they have stolen.
In the meantime, Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit discovers that Tom is missing. She begins searching for him and just then Mrs. Ribby arrives and she helps Tabitha search for Tom.
The rats begin to roll Tom into the dough with the rolling pin but in doing so they make a noise and Tabitha hears them through the floorboards. They call the carpenter, John Joiner, who manages to save Tom from the rats. They remove the dough from poor Tom and he is given a bath.
Meanwhile, Samuel Whiskers and Anna Marie escape to the barn where they end up causing chaos for Farmer Potatoes!
The story ends with Beatrix Potter telling us that Mittens and Moffet become excellent rat catchers but poor Tom is so scared of the rats after his horrible experience that he won’t go near anything that is bigger than a mouse!
